Firearms must be registered with the Fort McCoy Directorate of Emergency Services Failure to register firearms may result in a citation and confiscation. 

• Register your firearm by completing Fort McCoy Form 433 found here.
• Once Fort McCoy Form 433 is completed email to the Permit Office at usarmy.mccoy.id-readiness.mbx.des-fire-arm-registration@army.mil
• Permit processing takes 24 hours. If registering on a Friday afternoon, your registration may not be processed until Monday of the following week. 
• Your registration will be emailed to you by the Permit Office
• Keep a copy of your permit with you at all times while on Federal property. A copy on your phone will suffice.
• Failure to properly register firearms may result in a citation and a confiscation of firearms.  This would include any firearms on federal property including, but not limited to, Pine View Campground, Sportsman's Range, Tactics Paintball and Whitetail Ridge.
• Questions should be directed at the Permit Office at 608-388-2357.

After you’ve gotten your firearms registered:

• Call 608-388-3517 for reservation requests.
• Reservation requests need to be approved by Fort McCoy Range Control.
• Please call as far ahead as possible with your Reservation Request.

$5 per person = 1 hour per shooting lane, no shot limit.

Example: If you plan to shoot rifle and pistol, you will rent the rifle lane for $5 per hour and also rent the pistol lane for $5 per hour.  More time on a lane can be worked depending on lane availability.

General Rules

• Clean up all trash.
• Remove targets and dispose of properly.
• Return targets and stands to the range shack.
• Ensure all guns are unloaded, cleared, and cased prior to departing the range.
• Place all expended brass in brass collection containers provided.
• Hearing and Eye protection is mandatory for all shooters on the range.
• No consumption of alcohol on the range or during use of the range.
• Guns will be pointed down range at all times.
• Know and obey all range rules.
• All injuries will be reported.
• Smoking on ranges is not permitted at any time.
• In the event of bad weather, please follow rules of the Range Officer.
• Violation and failure to comply with range rules/standards will result in loss of privileges.
• The Range Officer will have final interpretation on all range rules and guidelines.

Pistol Rules

• Unload all pistols during cease fire and magazines will be extracted from semi-automatic pistols.
• There will be “No Handling of Guns” when personnel are down range.
• No firing in front of the shooting benches without authorization.
• Only authorized targets will be utilized.
• Maximum size of ammunition is .50 caliber.

Rifle Rules

• Automatic firing of weapons is prohibited.
• There will be “No Handling of Guns” when personnel are down range.
• No firing in front of the shooting benches without authorization.
• Only authorized targets will be utilized.
• Maximum size of ammunition is .50 caliber.

Skeet & Trap Rules

• When trap houses are being attended (reloading skeet machines etc) shooters will unload their guns and have action open.
• Shotguns no smaller than .410 gauges or larger than 12 gauges may be used on the skeet and trap range.
• Shot no larger than #7 ½ is allowed.
• Slugs are prohibited. Skeet and Trap will not be conducted simultaneously.

Eligibility

Range is open to active duty military, retired military, U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) appropriated fund and non-appropriated fund employees, retired civilian employees, DoD contractor employees working full-time at Fort McCoy identified through Department of the Army civilian identification card and their immediate Family members and guests. 

Directions

The Sportsman's Range is adjacent to Pine View Campground located near Fort McCoy between Sparta and Tomah on Hwy 21 with the entrance approximately 1.6 miles west of the Fort McCoy Main gate.  Watch for the Pine View Campground/Whitetail Ridge Ski Area signs and follow them to the range.

From the La Crosse Area:

1.  Take I90 East to WI Hwy 27 (Exit 25-Sparta/Melvina Exit, approximately 23 miles)

2.  Take a Left onto WI Hwy 27 (also known as Black River Street)

3.  Take a Right on Montgomery Street (3rd set lights from Interstate, approximately 2.5 miles)

4.  Go straight through the first stop sign

5.  Take a Left at the second Stop Sign (Hwy 21)

6.  Continue straight on WI Hwy 21 for approximately 7 miles

7.  Take a Left by the Pine View Campground/Whitetail Ridge Ski Area sign and follow the signs to the campground/Sportsman’s Range.

From Madison/Tomah area:

1.  Take I94 to Tomah (exit 143 Tomah/Fort McCoy)

2.  Take a Left onto WI Hwy 21 (west) 

3.  Go straight through 2 sets of stop lights (you will pass Subway and at the second set of lights a Super Wal-Mart)

4.  Continue straight on WI Hwy 21 for approximately 9 miles

5.  Take a Right by the Pine View Campground/Whitetail Ridge Ski Area sign and follow the signs to the campground/Sportsman’s Range
